about

Sometimes called Sally My Dear, Hares on the Mountain is a Victorian folk song consisting of sexual metaphors and strange goings on which seem to describe brazen and combative women: “If all the young men were hares on the mountain, how many young girls would take guns and go hunting?”.
As with Seven Gypsies released last month, the purpose of this version isn’t to pay homage but to peel back the reverential folk tropes and reimagine an old story. This take was recorded quickly with no sound processing, just a rough demo aesthetic.
Wilkes has recorded a series of traditional pieces of which this is the second to be released.
